Foundation Phase
The teachers play the main role in this phase, in the ensuing phases the teachers play the role of mentor, moderator, and assessor of the students. At this juncture, the teachers establish contact with each other and work out their objectives for the collaboration. They will decide how this project will fit into their respective curricula and produce guidelines, expectations, and instructions for the students on how to use the technology. They will also explain the objectives of the project. A talk about safety and the internet should be part of this phase as well as etiquette and cultural considerations.
Introduction Phase
This phase is informal and would take the shape of a general conversation in which the students get to know one another. Interests, hobbies, favorite artists, and sports are examples of subject areas that could be explored. A little about the city, culture, holidays, personal biographies, and such things as "What is the town famous for?" could be covered. These tasks would cultivate cultural sensitivity and incorporate discovery through interaction. An ice breaker could include sharing photographs of the schools, city, and perhaps the students when initial contact is made between the two schools.
Comparative Phase
At this point there would be more structure and it would involve the students collaborating together for the design of the website. A brainstorming session of ideas followed by a comparative analysis of which ideas would best serve the organizational flow of pages for the website. The students would then exchange information and ideas about which themes and media they would use in order to complete the task. The gallery would be open to both video, image galleries, slideshows, as well as audio. This would give them many options to consider. Idea generation, explanations, rationale, and reasoning are all forms of interchange that would occur at this stage of the design. There will be a gap of time between this phase and the next that will allow the students to complete their artwork for the final website.
Negotiation Phase
At this stage the students will have already completed their artwork. The students would then have to discern which art pieces to incorporate as well as reappraise which themes and media they would use in order to best present their work. They would decide what the layout structure of the pages should be and what written and/or audio accompaniment could be part of the 'gallery show'. Negotiation of meaning, planning, and coordination unfold at this stage.
Conclusion Phase
The images for the final galleries will be uploaded. Only first names of the students or only the names of the artwork itself would be presented on a public website. A blog page for commentary to complement each gallery page will also be uploaded. The students can invite other members of the school and/or public to post responses to the 'gallery show'. Reflective thinking about the project could conclude the assignment.
